What We Desire
We desire to have every woman, man, and child understand the power of their voice and use the language and ideology of Respect My No to actively fight against sexual assault and social inequality of every kind.
What We believe
Respect My No is an unambiguously clear statement to the listener to stop whatever he or she is doing and push no more. Respect My No requires the listener to (1) identify the speaker as a human, (2) treat him or her as their equal, and (3) respect the speaker's affirmative statement. Whether it is the young girl or boy who has said “no” multiple times to unwanted sexual advances, or Rosa Parks saying “no” to racial, social, and systematic injustice, saying Respect My No is an undeniably clear indication of what one expects the other to do – honor what was said and push no more.
THE STORY BEHIND IT ALL
Four-year-old Phoenix demanded her dad to respect her "no". While eating at a wedding, Dad tried to entice Phoenix into trying a classic: biscuits and gravy. Dad called Phoenix over and said " try these biscuits and gravy". Phoenix kindly responded with “No, thank you Dad.” But Dad continued. “Phoenix, you need to try it; you cannot go through life without trying new things or saying you do not like something without trying it first.” Phoenix remained unfazed and responded kindly, “Dad, I do not prefer to try it.” Dad persisted, “Phoenix, just try it; I know you will like it!” Phoenix turned towards her dad, looked directly into his eyes and said, “Dad, you need to Respect My No!”
Dad had a choice to make: (1) he could get offended and make her try it, or (2) he could respect the unambiguously clear "no". Choosing the latter, Dad responded, “You're right, honey; I need to ‘Respect Your No,’ and every person needs to ‘Respect Your No,’ no matter who they are."
Ignited by the power in Phoenix's voice, and strength and rebirth symbolized in her name, Respect My No was formed!
